In NSW, WICEN consists of several Regions and Groups, which manage both the operational and administrative aspects of WICEN operations in the regional area.
The state executive handles administration on a state-wide basis, taking care the formal aspects of an incorporated body as well as areas outside the established Regions and Groups.

Every year on the first full weekend of July, the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad organises and runs the NSW Emergency Services Wilderness Navigation Shield or NavShield. Entries come from the VRA, both regional and specialist squads, SES, Police including Police Rescue, Ambulance and SCAT, RFS, Other emergency services including rescue helicopters and medical teams, Armed Forces and Bushwalking Clubs.
The event is endorsed by the NSW State Rescue Board, and entry is open to all groups that participate in search and rescue activities. Bushwalking Clubs and Members of Rogaining Associations are also welcome.
Participants test their bush and compass navigation abilities in an overnight event through 100 square kms of wilderness terrain a few hours drive from Sydney.
WICEN provides a safety and management communications network for the weekend.
