During the week, the New South Wales Volunteer Rescue Association requested that WICEN provide personnel towards their commitment to provide around 24 people to assist police in tasks such as staffing road blocks, door-knocking residents, and evacuations where required, for the State Mine fire around Lithgow. Of the 14 members who made themselves available, a team of 4 members was selected for a three day tour of duty based out of VRA Lithgow for Thursday 24th, Friday 25th and Saturday 26th.

This weekend WICEN is supporting Project Wittenoom, evidently randomly named, with nothing to do with asbestos mining. This is the large scale, multi-agency search for missing Cessna VH-MDX in the Barrington Tops.
WICEN has received an invitation from its sister sister squad, Cave Rescue, to have a small team participate in their multi agency exercise being held on November 9 & 10 in the Jenolan Caves area. WICEN's involvement would not include entering the cave, only the provision of some surface communications.

A number of WICEN member were present at the funeral of Garry Barker VK2BR this week.

Garry Barker VK2BR (VK2TSR) died peacefully on the evening of 15th September after a long illness. He was an enthusiastic member of a number of groups, including WICEN Sydney North. Mr Barker also served on the WICEN State Management Committee. His funeral service will be at Guardian Funerals, Cnr of First Avenue and Sunnyholt Road Blacktown, on Tuesday 24th September at 2.00pm

WICEN was recently involved in the search for Gary Tweddle in and around Leura in the upper Blue Mountains. His body has been located and recovered from a very difficult location on a cliff in the area, and formally identified.

The Hawkesbury Canoe Classic is scheduled for 26th and 27th of October. Due to the number of checkpoints along the river, stations on vessels, command points, and other stations, WICEN needs to field a large number of volunteers.
